Barmuda to Revitalize Properties on College Hill

Cedar Falls – Darin Beck and Barmuda are pleased to announce that they are taking over ownership of the businesses of the former TonyÕs La Pizzeria (2210 College St.) and The Stein (925 W. 22nd St.), and converting them into all-new food, beverage and entertainment venues. Beck and former owner Tony Tomlyanovich, Jr., have reached a lease agreement whereby Beck will take over the properties on July 1.

Remodeling will start immediately to transform the former Stein into MojoÕs Pizza House, a live music venue serving pizza in the SteinÕs Pizza House tradition. Later in July, construction will begin to turn the former TonyÕs location into a second BeckÕs Sports Brewery. The upper level will be a UNI-Panther themed sports bar and restaurant, serving bestsellers from BeckÕs menu. The lower level will be a lounge, with flat-screen TVs that will focus on sports, but also show music videos later in the evening. The result will be  a multi-concept venue, with a sports bar, restaurant and ultra-lounge under one roof.  It will also serve BeckÕs microbrews on tap.

Recognizing the demand for a dedicated live music club, MojoÕs will feature local, regional and national bands every weekend and on some weeknights. The decision to keep The SteinÕs Pizza House pizza was simple. ÒWe are able to use their recipe and name,Ó Beck says. ÒItÕs been so popular for so many years, itÕs become part of the culture of the Hill. We need to keep it intact.Ó

Beck and Tomlyanovich began discussing possibilities in December of 2005 and negotiations began in January, but Beck backed out. ÒWe wanted to do what we thought would be best for the Hill,Ó Beck says. ÒIt just didnÕt seem like the right time.Ó

Talks resumed in late May, and a deal was signed last week. Beck has created two new corporations and has applied for two new liquor licenses, which will be presented to City Council on Monday.

ÒIÕve spent 20 years in food and beverage in this town and never had a business on the Hill,Ó Beck says. ÒNow, we see an opportunity to bring to the Hill what we know works. We see an opportunity to help turn things around.Ó

By adding food  and focusing on entertainment, Beck and Barmuda believe they can operate successful venues without the risk of underage drinking problems that have historically plagued the area. With processes and methods that have effectively deterred underage drinking in BarmudaÕs other nightclubs and lounges, Beck feels the situation will remain under control.

Tomlyanovich is pleased with the agreement he has fostered with Beck. ÒI grew up on the Hill,Ó he says. ÒThis is going to be very positive. IÕm excited. ItÕs going to help

start the revitalization of College Hill.Ó

Tomlyanovich says he now has freedom to pursue his interests in other markets, and hopes that BeckÕs investment in the Hill will later allow him to come back and build out his other properties in the area. ÒI have a sincere interest in seeing Darin prosper,Ó he says. ÒI just want to see the whole area prosper.Ó

Beck and Barmuda own and operate nine other food, beverage and entertainment venues in the Cedar Valley, including the original BeckÕs Sports Brewery on University Avenue in Waterloo.

ÒOur intent is to do the right thing and help bring business back to College Hill,Ó Beck says. ÒWe want to be a good neighbor. We want to be part of the renaissance.Ó
